Chapter Nine
Dina zipped shut the suitcase, humming a little to herself. At last the waiting was nearly over. By this time tomorrow they would be somewhere over the Atlantic, well on the way to London, their first stop. From there it was only a short hop across the Channel to Paris. She straightened the room, closing the closet doors, then checked that everything was in order. As an afterthought she felt under the bed for the invoices from Gusâs briefcase. Yes, they were still there, not that she felt sheâd ever have a use for them.
When she entered the kitchen after setting the suitcase and her carry-on bag near the back door, she saw at once that Ran had a more settled look about him. He sat at the table set with cream and sugar and coffee cups, thumbing through an old magazine. The restless prowling had abated; he wore the expression of a man who has given long thought to a matter and has come to terms with it.
Warily she eyed him as she poured her own coffee. Did that bode good or bad for her?
âNow,â he said when she had taken a seat opposite him, âtell me about Gus and your marriage. Everything.â
âItâs not any of--â
âMy business,â he interrupted. âI know. Maybe it isnât, but since last night thatâs changed. Whether we admit it or not, we have a relationship. You say you donât want a future, as if by eliminating expectations you can rule out the possibility of getting hurt. Well, itâs not always the woman who gets hurt in an affair. Men can hurt, too. What I said earlier was mostly in self-defense.â
âIn other words you didnât like the heat, so you wanted to get out of the kitchen.â Perhaps she should have been more tactful, she thought as soon as the words left her mouth, but he looked as if he could take it.
âSomething like that,â he conceded.
âThen maybe you should tell me about your marriage. Or whatever it was thatâs made you so wary of women.â
He flung his head up. âMy marriage was too brief to make any impression. And it was over a long time ago.â But he knew that was only half the truth.
His marriage had taught him to be wary, but his dealings with women since had never called that into question. Until Dina. He was more emotionally drawn to her than to any woman in his past. Yes, he was scared.
âOkay.â She shrugged, tucking her hair behind her ear and leaning back in the chair. âHave it your way.â
She took a drink from her mug, and he knew she wasnât going to volunteer anything without further prodding. But he had to know how a woman so obviously self-assured and in control had gotten mixed up with someone like Gus Pappas. She must have fancied herself in love with him once. âHow did you come to marry Gus?â
âYou canât leave it alone, can you?â she retorted. âOkay, you asked for it. I was very young.
